Government launch new guidance for tenants

On 13 March 2015, the Department of Communities and Local Government issued new guidance for tenants on Renting a safe home.

The guidance explains some of the hazards that tenants may encounter under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System and outlines landlords’ repairing obligations under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985. The guidance suggests checks that tenants can perform to identify hazards and explains how to raise any concerns with the landlord or managing agent. If the landlord fails to respond, tenants are then advised to contact the environmental health team at their local council.
