Barking & Dagenham Council’s selective licensing scheme has ended
The selective landlord licensing scheme implemented in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham has ended after five years.
In a notice displayed on the council’s website, it explains the selective licensing scheme ended on 31 August 2024 and that there is currently no requirement to license any private rented property in the borough unless it falls under the mandatory HMO licensing scheme.
Earlier this year, Barking & Dagenham Council consulted on plans to implement new borough wide additional and selective licensing schemes (read here).
Since the consultation ended on 26 April 2024, we understand the council has been reviewing all the feedback before deciding whether the implement new licensing schemes.
Whilst a decision to introduce additional licensing can be made locally, any decision to implement a replacement borough wide selective licensing scheme will need government approval.
With any new scheme requiring at least three months notice before it comes into force, it looks increasing unlikely any new scheme will start before next year.
